Marianne von Werefkin. Autumn (School). 1907

Woe betide anyone who wants to make a life of art. I would long to see art everywhere – in objects around us, in relations among people, in the manner of speech. Courteous upbringing was an art, but it is no longer wanted. People prefer to be cruel, rude and discourteous and to think they are right in doing that. Man is an animal, and art alone is capable of masking the beast.
